‘Ride Along’ Cruises to 3-Peat

First of the 2014 Box Office

February 4, 2014 by

Since setting a new January record when it debuted a couple weeks ago, Ride Along has been on cruise control. By easily rolling over challenger I, Frankenstein the next weekend and then doing the same to openers That Awkward Moment and Labor Day during the Super Bowl weekend, the Kevin Hart and Ice Cube buddy comedy officially became the first movie of 2014 to three-peat at the domestic box office.

Last year didn’t see a back-to-back-to-back champ until September when Lee Daniels’ The Butler accomplished the feat (although it needed an extended holiday weekend). Gravity, our pick for Movie of the Year, followed suit the next month, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug became the third movie of 2013 to three-peat during the final weekend of last year.

Frozen, Disney’s Oscar-nominated hit musical, used a sing-along version to extend its magical run and retake the runner-up spot in its 11th week. The computer-animated family film, which had some of the best 3D of last year, crossed the $350 million mark and will soon overtake Despicable Me 2 for the third-highest grossing movie of 2013.

Settling for third place right behind Frozen was That Awkward Moment, which suffered the lowest wide release opening ever for a Zac Efron movie. In its third weekend and in fourth place, 3D computer-animated family comedy The Nut Job edged out Oscar-nominated war movie Lone Survivor, which hit the nine-figure total gross milestone in its sixth weekend.

Left out of the top five, which you can check out below via BOM, was Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin drama Labor Day, the first wide release from four-time Oscar nominee Jason Reitman, who last directed Young Adult.

The upcoming weekend introduces a trio that will try to break Ride Along‘s winning streak. It includes star-studded war dramedy The Monuments Men, fantasy adaptation Vampire Academy, and 3D adventure comedy The Lego Movie, an honorable mention for one of our most anticipated movies of 2014.
