Sacha Baron Cohen is brilliant when it comes to the marketing of his films. We've seen Baron Cohen teabag Eminem at the MTV Video Music awards, spill the "ashes" of the late Kim Jong-il on pretty boy Ryan Seacrest at the Oscars, and now "murder" a model/actress. The latest Baron Cohen stunt that is making headlines today involves him in character as Admiral General Aladeen (The... Read More »

Like Gangster Squad, here's another movie that we didn't have on our Most Anticipated Movies of 2012 list, but we most likely would have if this trailer had existed half a year ago. Director Rian Johnson reunites with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whom he previously worked with on his rookie effort (the excellent neo-noir Brick), in another movie with film noir elements except this tim... After smashing box office and MediaStinger records in its debut last week, The Avengers easily repeated at the top of the domestic box office this weekend while breaking even more records. Its estimated $103.2 million take in its second weekend was the highest ever for a sophomore score, shattering the previous second-weekend high of $75.6 million by Avatar. Since last week,... Gangster Squad is a movie that we didn't have on our Most Anticipated Movies of 2012 list, but most likely would have added if we had seen this trailer before compiling the list. Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer's latest period piece follows a squad of Los Angeles cops (Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, and Anthony Mackie) who are attempting to keep Eas... The first summer blockbuster of 2012 is officially on its way to become one of the biggest ever as it denied Think Like A Man the second three-peat of the year. The Avengers accomplished what The Hunger Games couldn't a couple months ago, when its opening feast was big enough for third place all-time. Marvel's team of superheroes didn't just break... it shattered the record for... Read More »

  • The Dictator (Re)View Posted by 3 days, 11 hrs ago on May 16, 2012 0 Comments
    Our Score:
Once you realize in the beginning of the movie that The Dictator is going to be an over-the-top comedy, you'll be able to enjoy it more. But let me warn you now: despite the long list of similarities (including the trademark stunt marketing), Sacha Baron Cohen's latest offensive (to put it very lightly) character trails Borat in nearly every, if not all, aspects of entertainment. If Borat is the Gaddafi or Bin Laden of Baron Cohen's work, then The Dictator is like Kim Jong-un, not really proven. Co-written by and starring Sacha Baron Cohen, The Dictator chronicles a visit to the U... Read More »

    Our Score:
The summer movie season officially launched today with one of our most anticipated movies of 2012, and damn, was it a freaking blast! The culmination of five prior Marvel films, The Avengers is the pot o' gold at the end of the rainbow of various popular superheroes, wholeheartedly embodying the comic-book studio's name (i.e., you WILL marvel at what you'll see). Even though I had some more-than-satisfying action just last week in Safe, Jason Statham's bad-ass rampage through Manhattan was like a salad appetizer compared to what The Avengers serves you. It's a very appropriate tit... Read More »

    Our Score:
If not for The Raid: Redemption's stateside release about a month ago, my clear-cut choice for best action movie of the year so far would probably be the new Jason Statham action flick, Safe, a fast-paced thrill ride that more than satisfyingly delivers what I expected from Safe House a while ago. Whereas that Denzel vehicle might have been one of the bigger disappointments of the pre-blockbuster season, Safe ranks as one of the bigger surprises yet and could very well end up being one of the best by year's end. Written and directed by Boaz Yakin, who's taken a substantially diffe... Read More »
  • The Pirates! Band of Misfits (Re)View Posted by 3 weeks, 3 days ago on April 25, 2012 1 Comments
    Our Score:
Bland, ho! This Band of Misfits must've made a stop in the Caribbean because I have a new candidate for the most disappointing film of the year, and I'm a sucker for animated flicks. While Aardman Animations' previous movie (Arthur Christmas) wasn't in the lovable stop-motion format that put them on the map, I've enjoyed their entire track record of films, including Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and Flushed Away. That is, until now. Despite being composed of the same ingredients that made its predecessors successful, Aardman's maiden voyage into 3D,... Read More »
