Re-‘Bourne’ & ‘Campaign’ Break Batman’s Streak

Box Office: 'Hope Springs' Opens in 4th; 'Total Recall' Plummets in Sophomore Weekend

August 15, 2012 by

Despite easily three-peating the previous weekend after a just-as-easy repeat before that and a record opening for a 2D movie, The Dark Knight Rises was unable to extend its winning streak atop the domestic box office last weekend. Christopher Nolan’s highly acclaimed final chapter to his Batman reboot trilogy may have eclipsed a pair of newcomers in each of the previous two weekends, but this time the one-two punch of new challengers The Bourne Legacy, a spy action franchise spin-off/extender that introduces Jeremy Renner to the series, and The Campaign, a political R-rated comedy starring Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis, was too much.

Like The Avengers earlier this summer, The Dark Knight Rises will fall a week short of matching the month-long streak The Hunger Games. The latest big-budget flop, the Total Recall remake, suffered a tremendous 69% drop in its sophomore weekend, putting it in danger of bombing harder than John Carter and Battleship.

Here were the top five via BOM:

  1. The Bourne Legacy — Weekend Gross: $38.1 million — Total Gross: $38.1 million (new)
  2. The Campaign — Weekend Gross: $26.6 million — Total Gross: $26.6 million (new)
  3. The Dark Knight Rises — Weekend Gross: $19 million — Total Gross: $390 million (#1 last week)
  4. Hope Springs — Weekend Gross: $14.7 million — Total Gross: $19.1 million (new)
  5. Total Recall — Weekend Gross: $8 million — Total Gross: $44.1 million (#2 last week)
