007 Back at #1, Breaking ‘Dawn’ Streak

Box Office: Bond Reclaims Top Spot; Rom-Com 'Playing For Keeps' Opens in 6th

December 10, 2012 by

In a very close race across the board atop the domestic box office, 007 reclaimed the #1 spot after three straight weeks of settling behind the final Twilight movie. After barely being beaten last week by Breaking Dawn – Part 2, James Bond helped prevent a 4-peat by the fantasy romance series finale, much like Men in Black 3 did when it broke the back-to-back-to-back winning streak of The Avengers earlier this year. The 23rd film in the longest running franchise in cinematic history, Skyfall, ensured that The Hunger Games would be the only film of 2012 to 4-peat.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 actually fell a couple places to third as DreamWorks Animation’s 3D CGI family flick, Rise of the Guardians, climbed a spot to second after stepping up to third last week from fourth place the week before. Steven Spielberg’s biopic Lincoln and Ang Lee’s 3D live-action adventure Life of Pi maintained their holds of fourth and fifth places, respectively. This left newcomer Playing For Keeps, a romcom starring Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel, out of the top five, which you can check out below via BOM:

  1. Skyfall — Weekend Gross: $10.8 million — Total Gross: $261.4 million (#2 last week)
  2. Rise of the Guardians — Weekend Gross: $10.4 million — Total Gross: $61.8 million (#3 last week)
  3. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 — Weekend Gross: $9.2 million — Total Gross: $268.7 million (#1 last week)
  4. Lincoln — Weekend Gross: $8.9 million — Total Gross: $97.1 million (#4 last week)
  5. Life of Pi — Weekend Gross: $8.3 million — Total Gross: $61 million (#5 last week)
