‘Hunger Games’ 4-Peats, ‘Stooges’ Wins Leftovers

Box Office Debuts: 'Three Stooges' at 2nd, 'Cabin in the Woods' at 3rd, 'Lockout' at 9th

April 17, 2012 by

The Hunger Games, which scored the first three-peat of 2012 at the domestic box office over Easter weekend, extended its winning streak to four last weekend (and becoming the first movie since Avatar to four-peat) over three newcomers. Most of the leftovers were claimed by The Farrelly Brothers’ introduction of The Three Stooges to younger generations, but “horror” thriller The Cabin in the Woods was not too far behind the slapstick comedy to settle for the third. In any case, both of these openings were light years ahead of Luc Besson’s action-in-space production, Lockout, which debuted only in ninth place.

Titanic 3D kept sailing strongly to claim fourth place as it continues to reinforce its all-time king-of-the-world status at the domestic box office, and American Reunion rounded out the top five. The Lorax crossed the $200 million mark, and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island traversed the $100 million milestone.

Here were the top five in the domestic box office last weekend via BOM:
