Star Trek Into Darkness Grounds Iron Man 3 at Box Office

Posted by on May 20, 2013

The maiden voyage of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness was successful enough over the weekend to ground Iron Man 3 and prevent the Marvel giant from becoming the first movie of the year to three-peat atop the domestic box office. Honored as our most anticipated movie of 2013, the twelfth film of the iconic sci-fi franchise opened last Thursday and has beamed up $83.7 million since its release. While this is comparable to the four-day gross of its predecessor, Star Trek‘s $86.1 million four years ago didn’t have the additional numbers boost from 3D and IMAX shows that Into Darkness is currently enjoying.

Iron Man 3 now trails The Avengers by $120 million through 17 days. Although its huge sky-high debut was only second to that of The Avengersrecord-setting launch and although Iron Man 3 has fallen shy of matching The Avengersthree-peat feat, Stark Industries still has plenty to be proud of. The blockbuster sequel crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide and is already the ninth highest ever in worldwide gross. Iron Man 3 should have no problem overtaking No. 8 on the all-time global list, The Dark Knight Rises, very soon.

Last weekend’s runner-up, The Great Gatsby, slid to third place in its second weekend and will soon cross the $100 million mark. Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s great American novel bumped Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain off the final podium spot and into fourth. The relatively low-budgeted dark action comedy should cross the $50 million mark by the end of the week. Rounding out the top five, which you can check out below via boxoffice.com, was DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods, which crawled back up from seventh place.

The upcoming extended Memorial Day weekend brings a triple threat to Star Trek Into Darkness‘ chances of repeating when moviegoers will also have animated adventure Epic, comedy The Hangover Part III, and yet another action sequel, Fast & Furious 6, to choose from.
