Nigeria Isn’t Too Happy with Sony

You Can't Believe Everything You Read on the Internet

September 21, 2009 by

This summer’s blockbuster hit District 9 was highly controversial due to many people, especially those in Nigeria, believing that the movie portrayed Nigerians negatively as cannibalistic thugs. As a result, the Nigerian Information Minister is requesting that all Nigerian movie theaters no longer show District 9, confiscate all copies, edit and/or remove offensive scenes, and has written to Sony asking for an โ€˜unconditional apologyโ€™.

As if Sony didn’t have enough of a PR problem with the release of District 9, there is now a commercial for the newly priced PlayStation 3 where a Sony “Director of Rumor Confirmation” says, “You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet, otherwise I’d be a Nigerian millionaire by now.” Now the Nigerian Minister of Information and Communication has issued a statement saying Nigeria โ€œdemands an unconditional apology from Sony Corporation for this deliberate negative campaign against the countryโ€™s image and reputation.”

Wow that’s a lot of apologies, maybe I can get one from Sony for buying a PlayStation 3 right before the price drop and for all of Killzone 2‘s current problems.
