With the latest Star Wars trailer creating even more hype for this year’s most anticipated film, it would be stupid for another big-budget movie’s trailer to be released not even 24 hours later. But with a bootleg copy of the first teaser trailer for Batman v Superman leaking out onto the Internet, Warner Bros. were left with no other option than to go ahead and try to top Chewie and Crew by releasing the official high-quality version online.
Taking place two years after Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder and star Henry Cavill are returning to also take on Batman, played by Ben Affleck, who plans on kicking Superman’s ass. Wonder Woman and Aquaman are also set to make appearances, but they are nowhere to be found in this first look and likely to show up in the next teaser or trailer that hopefully delivers the real goods.
Aside from Batfleck in full costume with glowing white eyes and his new Jigsaw-like deep raspy voice, watching the trailer is a bit underwhelming after being blown away earlier this week by The Force Awakens. It’s nice to finally see the Comic-Con footage shown exclusively to attendees last summer… but everything else just seems rushed and when combined with the footage leaking, director Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad / Game of Thrones) leaving Wonder Woman, and Jared Leto’s lame Joker selfies that pale in comparison to Ledger’s big reveal, you can’t help but feel a sense of “meh” towards the current state of the DC Universe.
That’s not to say that this first look at Batman v Superman isn’t good… and Affleck is certainly looking badass in Frank Miller’s style of Batman… it’s just that everything is starting to feel rushed and slightly disappointing even with the film already being delayed a year. Hopefully the final products will all come together to give Marvel some real competition at next summer’s box office. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for release on March 25, 2016.
