The bad news is that The Host is based on a book by author Stephanie Meyer, who wrote the Twilight series that spawned the intolerable cinematic saga of an interspecies love triangle against the backdrop of vampires vs. werewolves. The good news is everything else.
The Host has an intriguing sci-fi premise, albeit with elements previously done before. The top billed star is Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, Hanna), and the cast includes Academy Award winner William Hurt. It’s written and directed by Academy Award nominee Andrew Niccol, and I’ve enjoyed all of his movies thus far (Gattaca, The Truman Show, S1m0ne, The Terminal, Lord of War, In Time). Hopefully, The Host isn’t a streak breaker.
Niccol has proven that he can effectively inject drama into sci-fi, which is a task that seems like he’ll have to do again in The Host, a story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war as human bodies are taken over by unseen invaders. The Host is scheduled for release on March 29, 2013.
