Texas 3D Chainsaws Django & Hobbit at Box Office

Posted by on January 9, 2013

It wasn’t close to a massacre (making the word’s omission from this popular franchise iteration’s truncated title all the more appropriate), but the first weekend of 2013 was a kill for the critically crapped-on, low-budget Texas Chainsaw 3D. The 7th slasher of the staple horror series, which picks up directly from the 1974 original, edged Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed Western thriller Django Unchained and prevented Peter Jackson’s prequel trilogy starter The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from extending its three-peat atop the domestic box office.

Despite barely having to settle for silver a second time in consecutive weekends, Django Unchained crossed the $100 million mark and leapfrogged over The Hobbit, which dropped to third place. Les Misérables also passed the $100 million mark, although it did so in record-setting fashion, as the fastest to do so ever for a musical. Rounding out the top five, which you can check out below via BOM, was holdover Parental Guidance, a family comedy starring Billy Crystal and Bette Midler.

  1. Texas Chainsaw 3D — Weekend Gross: $21.7 million — Total Gross: $21.7 million (new)
  2. Django Unchained — Weekend Gross: $20.0 million — Total Gross: $106.3 million (#2 last week)
  3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey — Weekend Gross: $17.5 million — Total Gross: $263.8 million (#1 last week)
  4. Les Misérables — Weekend Gross: $16.0 million — Total Gross: $103.5 million (#3 last week)
  5. Parental Guidance — Weekend Gross: $9.7 million — Total Gross: $52.3 million (#4 last week)
