PlayStation 3 Overtakes Xbox 360 Globally

Strong Console Sales in Europe Help Bring Sony Back

April 2, 2011 by

Despite continuing to win the head-to-head battle here in the states, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is now globally losing the war to Sony’s PlayStation 3, thanks to a slight lead in console sales in Europe. According to global research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics, the Nintendo Wii continues to dominate with the world’s largest install base of 75.5 million active units worldwide, but the active install base of PS3s has just reached 43.4 million, which is barely passing Xbox 360’s 42.9 million units.

Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 trail Nintendo’s Wii significantly in both the domestic and worldwide markets, but a slowing trend in Wii sales may allow Microsoft to retake 2nd place. If you have all three consoles, then this news is irrelevant and I kindly suggest you make a donation to MediaStinger.
