December 1, 2011 by

Two years ago we had Avatar, last year we had Tron, and next year Disney will be launching a new film franchise that can best be summed up as Star Wars meets Avatar. But before you watch the trailer, what you may not know is that Disney’s latest film adaption of John Carter is actually based on novels from 100 years ago by Edgar Rice Burroughs, which have helped influence legendary sci-fi film creators like George Lucas and James Cameron.

With a $250,000,000 budget, there are very high expectations for Disney’s latest with hopes that it can break out and become a massive mainstream hit just as all the movies it’s inspired. John Carter is set for release on March 9, 2012; you can check out the full HD trailer and synopsis below:

From Academy Awardยฎ–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”โ€”a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
