Jack Climbs Atop Giant Flop Office Weak-end

Posted by on March 6, 2013

Jack the Giant Slayer technically killed the rest of the competition at the domestic box office over the weekend with a $27 million debut, but it was a meager win for the folktale re-envisioning when its reported gigantic $195 million budget is taken into account. Identity Thief, last week’s reigning champ, fell back to second place, but in its fourth weekend it still managed to top the opening of another R-rated comedy, 21 and Over, which trailed by less than $1 million and edged holdover Snitch by less than another $1 million.

Rounding out the top five, which you can check out below via BOM, was The Last Exorcism Part II, which trailed Snitch by only $40,000. The sequel opened to numbers way below the original’s and other horror movies’ this year, but it’s already recouped its low budget. Finally, submarine thriller Phantom may have dived to the worst opening of the abysmal weak-end. Its first-time distributor, RCR, hasn’t reported any box office figures, but estimates indicate that Phantom sunk with around half a million dollars, putting it below the top 20.
