Pixar reminded DreamWorks Animation who’s the genre king this weekend when the former’s Brave opened to big numbers (becoming the 13th out of 13 Pixar films to open at #1) and prevented the latter’s reigning champ, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, a three-peat at the domestic office. The other newcomers, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, settled for third and tenth places, respectively, with Lincoln a few million behind Madagascar 3.
The Avengers, one of the two films that have been able to pull off a three-peat so far this year, is just a couple million away from becoming the third movie ever to cross the $600 million mark at the domestic box office. Both of last week’s major openers, That’s My Boy and Rock of Ages, confirmed their flop statuses by dropping out of the top five, which was rounded out by a steady hold by Snow White and the Huntsman.
Here were the top five via BOM:
- Brave — Weekend Gross: $66.3 million — Total Gross: $66.3 million (new)
- Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted — Weekend Gross: $19.7 million — Total Gross: $157.1 million (#1 last week)
- Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter — Weekend Gross: $16.3 million — Total Gross: $16.3 million (new)
- Prometheus — Weekend Gross: $9.9 million — Total Gross: $108.5 million (#2 last week)
- Snow White and the Huntsman — Weekend Gross: $8.1 million — Total Gross: $137.1 million (#5 last week)
