Alternate Ending (spoilers)
The Director’s Cut features an alternate (original) ending where Mike Enslin sets fire to 1408, but is not rescued by the fire department. During Enslin’s funeral, Olin tries to give a box of Enslin’s possessions to Lily and Enslin’s agent. After they both refuses to accept the box, Olin goes back to his car and listens to the recording on Enslin’s tape recorder. While listening to the tape, Olin looks in his rear-view mirror and imagines seeing Enslin’s burnt body in his backseat. After being spooked by the image, he stops listening to the recording and drives away.
The final scene shows Enslin in room 1408 smoking a cigarette and staring out the window. He hears his daughter calling his name and disappears as he walks towards the room’s door. The scene ends with the screen fading to black and the sound of the door closing.
