Sony Ends Their E3 2017 Media Briefing with Spider-Man

Insomniac Gives a First Look at the Web-Slinger in Action

June 21, 2017 by

Although many were hoping for PlayStation’s E3 2017 media briefing to end with a first look at The Last of Us 2‘s gameplay, Sony clearly didn’t want Naughty Dog’s sequel to overshadow their other upcoming triple-A zombie game, Days Gone. So instead, Sony chose to end their briefing with a first look at the highly anticipated open-world Spider-Man game from Insomniac. And from what was shown, the gameplay certainly did not disappoint.

In the first look at gameplay, Insomniac teased how the player as Spider-Man can traverse the city at high speeds with a multitude of ways to interact with the environment. Running straight up buildings looks awesome, but we’ve seen that before in games such as the Prototype series. But what was most impressive from the first look is how Insomniac seems to have figured out how to properly implement the web-slinging mechanic in an open-world setting while still seamlessly transitioning in and out to story-driven moments.

For years, gamers have been demanding a high quality Spider-Man game, and it looks like the developers behind the Resistance and Rachet & Clank franchises have finally done it on the current-gen. Just like what Rocksteady did with the Batman franchise, Insomniac’s open-world take on Spider-Man seems like it too could join the exclusive club of great superhero games.

Sony even threw in a stinger at the very end of the media briefing that teased the appearance of the latest Spider-Man from the comics, Miles Morales, and have teased alternative costumes to get fans hyped. Sadly, while the game will run at 4K on the PS4 Pro, it will be capped at 30fps… which isn’t helping the hype.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is set for release at the start of 2018 exclusively on PlayStation 4.
