Games these days... they’re all the same. Take, for example, Rebellion’s latest, NeverDead, a game in which you play as a wisecracking human named Bryce, who was cursed with immortality five hundred years ago, and now in modern times hunts demons for money and revenge with the power to regenerate lost limbs. Sound familiar? Maybe a little bit of a Hellboy vibe… but other than that, NeverDead is a fresh and innovative concept that’s never been done before in the gaming world wit... Read More »

With the success of found footage films like Cloverfield, Quarantine, and Paranormal Activity 3, it was only a matter of time before one of the hottest genres right now, the superhero movie, got the handheld camera treatment. Following a trio of high school students who develop newly found powers, Chronicle goes beyond the typical teenage tale of discovery, popularity, and identification. It's a short but effective ride that doesn't simply capitalize on the novelty of its handheld narr... Read More »

Vampires vs. werewolves or "lycans." A premise that was unique and fresh eight years ago when the original Underworld hit theaters and helped launch the career of Kate Beckinsale with her breakout role as Selene, a skin-tight leather-wearing, werewolf-slaying, vampire heroine. But after the last disappointing prequel that was sans Beckinsale and four terrible Twilight movies since then, the whole vampires vs. werewolves idea already seems done to death. Underworld: Awakening marks the ... Read More »

"Haywire you watching this movie?" That's what I'd ask you. And unless you're a Gina Carano fan or a hardcore Steven Soderbergh fan, you could probably skip this spy thriller without any qualms. Like his last film, Contagion, Soderbergh's latest movie is tamer than its potential, not something you want to hear about an action flick. Also like the disease drama, Haywire keeps your attention throughout, but unfortunately the payoff isn't worth the brief trip and falls short of the price ... Read More »

Apart from the Duke Nukem series, no other gaming franchise better sums up the late '90s / early '00s than NFL Blitz. It was a time when steroids were running rampant amongst all of professional sports and fans could care less (because this is America, damn it!) and the bigger the athletes and plays, the better. While American football wasn't that much different than it is today, Midway's NFL Blitz catered to a generation that wanted more excitement than what the more realistic Madden ... Read More »

Announced back in 2008, Star Wars: The Old Republic is the second take on a MMORPG based on the most popular sci-fi series of all time. 2003's Star Wars Galaxies was a complete disaster, and once MMO juggernaut World of Warcraft came around a year later in 2004, there hasn't been a single PC game that has been able to come close to its success, with over 10 million copies sold in the past seven years. BioWare's latest is one of the most ambitious development projects of all time, w... Read More »

Shown behind closed doors with no playable version just six months ago at E3, it’s surprising that Bethesda is already releasing their latest dragon-slaying, dungeon-crawling RPG. With an entirely new engine and tons of improvements, Bethesda is going all out with the latest installment in the popular Elder Scrolls franchise. So is Bethesda’s latest not only their best, but the best RPG ever made, making this the Year of the Dragon-born, or is this another case of a great game made... Read More »

I'll admit it. There was an ulterior motive to why I decided to catch Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol early in IMAX last night before it rolls out to regular theaters next week. While I am a fan of the series, the Eminem-y trailer didn't exactly blow me away or anything. Plus, I had already watched and enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes sequel and Young Adult earlier yesterday, so at that point I might've been more excited to catch the exclusive prologue of The Dark Knight Rises. Yeah... Read More »

Stick a fork in it. It's done. It's been overdone, in fact. So many comedies of the last decade feature some sort of man-child or deadbeat who simply won't grow up. Will Ferrell and Seth Rogan perfected that type of character and may have overstayed its welcome, but theaters this year have still been disgraced by reheated slop like Arthur and The Sitter. Leave it to some award-winners to breathe new life into the tired character niche. In a Golden Globe-nominated performance in Youn... Read More »

Director Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, an action-mystery that strayed considerably from his usual fare of often bloody and brutal British crime (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels; Snatch; RocknRolla), became his biggest box office hit. It also further solidified Robert Downey, Jr.'s comeback and ability to carry a blockbuster as the titular lead and proved that Iron Man wasn't a fluke. Hell, it was even nominated for a couple of Academy Awards, but don't get too excited because they... Read More »

With the onslaught of family films a couple weeks ago and no new releases last weekend, it's been three weeks since I last reviewed a movie, so I was pretty excited to get back at it tonight, even if it was to see something whose trailer isn't funny to me. But I thought at least the trailer and TV spots for The Sitter aren't anywhere near as insufferable as those for the other new release this week, New Year's Eve. Cuz I will effing lose it if I hear any part of "Give Me Everything" ag... Read More »

Another year, another Battlefield and Call of Duty. War. War never changes. Or does it? It's been six years since Battlefield 2 hit store shelves and we've seen a new version or expansion to the series released every year since 2005. Electronic Arts' latest Battlefield game looks to shake things up a bit in the gaming industry by making some big improvements to its graphics engine in an effort to dethrone the current king of entertainment, Call of Duty. But does Battlefield 3 actually ... Read More »

My fiancée isn't a major twihard or anything. The first Twilight movie "tickled" her heart, something she hadn't felt from a movie since Jack turned into an Arctic popsicle after sketching Rose's boobies. The love story prompted her to watch the next two Edward vs. Jacob films, but she's still only read the first book. However, about a week before the The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 opened, she warned me that I would be taking her to see it. Not to be a little Jacobitch or a... Read More »

Welcome to a fanboy's review of Activision's latest record-breaking blockbuster, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. First, let me introduce myself. I used to be a huge gamer, dipping into video game testing at my peak and still occasionally achievement whoring. But as I've had less and less time to enjoy the many facets of entertainment, movies is ultimately my true passion. It's a big reason why when I do have time for gaming, I love the cinematic experiences that the CoD campaigns immer... Read More »

Though it's obviously influenced by the almighty 300 and even straight up jacks numerous things from the popular 2006 fantasy film and other movies, Immortals establishes its own beautiful visual presentation and ups the ante on stylized violence. The producers of 300 have delivered a mythical action adventure that excels triumphantly at action but languishes disappointingly at adventure. Nevertheless, action fanatics should be dying to experience Immortals as long as they reward thems... Read More »

A Christmas movie four days after Halloween? Sure, why not? Especially when the other wide release this weekend is the awful-looking comedy Tower Heist. The trailer for A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas wasn't drastically better, but at least it promised sex, drugs, cock 'n' pole (okay, maybe that one's not such a good thing), and most importantly, the return of this generation's favorite minority doobie duo. Blazing another trail of high times, Harold & Kumar's new bud-dy com... Read More »
