Movie 43 Review

Sketch Collection Prides Itself on Being Extremely Distasteful & Blatantly Offensive

January 25, 2013 by

Peter Farrelly running the show, 4 years, 13 directors, 14 storylines, 18 writers, an ensemble cast of 43897507, many of whom were guilted into roles and ultimately didn’t promote the film at all because they eventually wanted nothing to do with it. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? And to many people who will watch Movie 43, “disaster” would be the perfect word to describe this comedy sh!tshow. But not me.

There’s barely a plot, if any at all, to relate to you here. All you need to know is that Movie 43 is a self-parodying sketch collection that prides itself on being extremely distasteful and blatantly offensive, arguably the most in recent memory (but I haven’t seen The Human Centipede 2). It’s like watching Robot Chicken for an hour and a half with less channel changes, longer skits, and hard R-rated everything. You name anything that might piss somebody off, and it’s more than likely in Movie 43.

As a feature length movie, this show might’ve worked well, but the last skit before the credits seems to confirm that the project was aimless from its very beginning and that they copped out at the end by giving up and making it yet another gimmicky production gag. I can easily see how Movie 43 could go down as one of the worst movies of all time, but as with A Thousand Words last year and Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star the previous year, I somehow enjoyed this. It was far better and funnier than the Farrelly brothers’ The Three Stooges, one of the worst movies of 2012.

Most of the short pieces in Movie 43 are quite hilarious, and a couple of them are just okay. ALL OF THEM exhibit the Farrelly brother staples that put them on the map with There’s Something About Mary. Expect things to be outrageous and/or obscene often. If you’re grossed out easily, save yourself some time and anger, and avoid Movie 43 at all costs. If you have an open sense of humor and can stomach disgusting stuff, give this a chance… and get comfortable for the extra scenes during the credits, which consist of an entire final sketch and is probably the longest stinger of all time. Movie 43 gets 2.5 out of 5 stars.
