Oblivion Trailer

First Look at Tom Cruise's New Sci-Fi Flick

December 11, 2012 by

If the Mayan calendar turns out to be wrong, 2013 is going to be a great year for big budget post-doomsday sci-fi films. Not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth, Oblivion, the new film from Tron: Legacy director and Rise of the Planet of the Apes producer Joseph Kosinski looks pretty damn good — especially considering Kosinski’s recent track record of hits as opposed to Shyamalan’s recent wave of flops.

With a solid team of writers, Morgan Freeman in a supporting role, and Tom Cruise in the lead, Oblivion seems to have all the makings of a successful box office hit; let’s just hope that there’s a little more to the story than the trailer teases and that it’s not just about Cruise’s character assuming the generic role of good guy who thinks he’s doing good, only to discover that the corporation he’s working for is actually evil, leading to him working with the people he thought were against him to take down the real bad guys. We’ve seen that too much lately, and hopefully going into Oblivion thinking I’m a know-it-all will leave me blown away with a real twist because I doubt After Earth is going to have a good one.

Oblivion hits theaters April 19, 2013. Check out the first official trailer and synopsis below:

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jackโ€™s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
