Five Million Copies of Battlefield 3 Sold In First Week

EA's Modern Shooter Off to a Strong Sales Start

October 31, 2011 by

I don’t think anybody (Battlefield fanboys and EA included) truly believed that Battlefield 3 would be able to outsell Modern Warfare 2 (Week 1: 8.2 million copies), Black Ops (Week 1: 9.5 million copies), or Modern Warfare 3. But then again, nothing right now is going to outsell any of the recent Call of Duty games and just because a game sells better than another doesn’t mean that it’s better — see 2009’s Game of the Year Uncharted 2 that crushed Modern Warfare 2 in the reviews despite selling nowhere near as well at launch.

While Battlefield might not beat Call of Duty in sales numbers, it’s still doing insanely good and EA is reporting that their third installment in the series has sold 5 million copies over the past week. Battlefield 3 might not be the Call of Duty killer, but BF3‘s strong sales numbers prove it is worthy of answering the call and that there are other games out there ready to challenge Call of Duty for the modern-shooter throne.

Modern Warfare 3 is set for release next week, so we still don’t officially know which is the better game or how many copies it will sell, but it looks like MW3 will easily win the battle of sales and most likely break its own record of 10 million copies in its first week.
