Doom Movie Reboot Rumors

Already? And possibly in 3D and PG-13?

March 9, 2011 by

Looks like Hollywood isn’t wasting any time trying to reboot previously failed movie franchises. The latest rumor is that a reboot of 2005’s failed video game to movie adaptation “Doom” is in the works. Apparently there are reports that Universal (which still owns the rights to Doom) is in the “early stages of development” on a reboot not even six years after the release of the first film.

Universal is said to be very interested in rebooting the franchise after the recent success of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, which earned $300 million on a $175 budget. The first Doom film was shot on a $66 million budget and has yet to break even by only grossing $56 million to date. The idea is that with a bigger budget and the use of 3D, a Doom remake could actually turn a profit. Another scary thought is the idea that with G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra being used as an example, Universal will want to make a PG-13 version of the film in order to help bring in even more ticket sales.

Personally, I didn’t think the first Doom was that bad, but then again it wasn’t anything special. I think part of the problem was how small of a budget they had to work with, most of which probably went to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, which isn’t a bad thing, Johnson is a good actor, but more money for a better script and set could have definitely helped. I actually really liked the ending when the movie switched into a first-person camera view, just like the game, and would love to see that scene alone in 3D. But the idea of Doom being rated PG-13? Let’s hope if the reboot does happen, that Universal kills that idea quick.
